Homemade 9V Battery Holder

Make Your Own Battery Holders From Scrap PVC Pipe

This is a quick and easy project to make your own custom PVC mounting clips for standard 9 volt batteries.

The PVC can be heated using a heat gun, propane torch, alcohol burner, or possibly a solar reflector (make it a Green Project!). Do not heat the PVC to the point that it starts to turn brown or burn...only to the point where it becomes pliable and easy bend.

You will need a 1.5 inch length of 3/4 inch thin-wall PVC lawn sprinkler pipe (the real cheap Schedule-20 stuff that sells for around USD $1.00 per 10 foot section at Home Depot or Lowes stores).

Heat this until it is soft and pliable, but not so hot that it starts to turn brown and burn.

Hold the heated plastic with a towel while you force it over a 9V battery, then let it set until cool.

Push your battery out of the PVC holder (this may take a bit of force if the PVC has contracted as it cools).

Drill two 1/8 inch diameter 3/4 inch spaced holes all the way through both sides of your new battery holder. Then enlarge the holes on one side to 1/4 inch diameter to allow a screw head to pass through.

Cut a slot down one side of the PVC tube to allow expansion as you insert a battery.

Now you can bolt, glue, or use double sided tape to fasten your new battery holder to the chassis of your next homebrew radio project.
